Finally, a proven and highly efficient way to apply the power of value stream mapping to the product development process. This two-day “process kaizen” event allows your team to focus on a specific aspect of your development process for dramatic improvement. Once completed, participants will be able to transfer this approach to any aspect of product development. The Value Stream Mapping for Lean Product Development Workshop requires no initial training; basic value stream mapping techniques are described at the beginning of the course. This initial tutorial is followed by a series of real-time exercises in which the attendees create a current state value stream map, analyze it for potential improvement using a set of proprietary techniques, and finally generate a future state map to guide your team's improvement efforts. This hands-on workshop covers all aspects of the subject, including a step-by-step process for using VSM techniques to systematically drive out waste from initial concept development to successful product launch.
Upon Completing this Course, Students Should Be Able to –
1. Identify non-value-added tasks and wasteful
work habits on any development project.
2. Understand how to adapt value stream mapping tools to the non-recurring
world of product development.
3. Apply a set of proprietary techniques to analyze your development process
for waste elimination.
4. Use a step-by-step method for prioritizing
improvement opportunities, based on a "current state" value stream
map.
5. Create a "future state" map that embodies all identified improvements.
6. Deploy these techniques outside of the classroom to enable an on-going
process improvement initiative.
Who Should Attend -
Product-line
managers, team leaders, task managers, functional managers, six-sigma blackbelts
/ greenbelts, improvement champions, operations managers, process owners,
design engineers, and all others with product development responsibilities.
Workshop Outline –
Note: This workshop uses Building a Project-Driven Enterprise, by Ron Mascitelli, as its textbook.
Part I. Adapting Value Stream
Mapping to New Product Development
• What's different about design and development?
• Recurring processes within a non-recurring
design project
• A simplified approach to value stream
mapping
• Using “drill-down” techniques
for rapidly isolating process waste
Part II. Creating a “Current
State” Value Stream Map
•
Establishing an appropriate scope for improvement
• Identifying trigger and exit points
• What should and should not be included
• Application of drill-down methods
• Creation of a prioritized list of opportunities
for improvement
Part III. A Toolbox for Product
Development Process Improvement
•
How to fix typical problems in new product development
• Identifying loops, serial / parallel
junctions, and bottlenecks
• How to enhance the effectiveness of
decision points
• Selecting the right improvement tool
for the job
Part IV. Building an Improved
“Future State”
• Immediate gratification
– a roadmap to improvement
• Identifying risks and roadblocks to
successfully achieving the future state
• Creation of an action plan for implementation
Part IV. Implementing an On-Going
Improvement Initiative
